Abstract: The present attack on the tobacco industry sets a precedent that portends badly for the future of freedom in this country. The proposed tobacco settlement funds new entitlements, gives new power to the federal agency that has been called a group of 'jack-booted thugs' (BATF), and restricts Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of consenting adults. Instead of reducing teen smoking, the settlement will more likely create an underground black market similar to the illegal drug distribution channels (who really believes that teens cannot and do not obtain illegal drugs?).
Keywords: book review, current_events, politics, constitution, smoking, smokers rights, BATF, sin tax, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, freedom, black market, underground economy, illegal drugs, war on drugs, prohibition, antismoking movement, public opinion, government policy, passive smoke, United States.
