How to Put Your Business on the Internet

In this article, we describe how Weyrich Consulting Services can help your company establish a presence on the Internet.

An outline of the topics covered follows. The links in the outline below correspond to the bubbles in the PERT diagram above. You may click on either.

Obtain Trademark Protection

Since the Internet covers not only all the United States, but also reaches throughout the world, you may want to secure trademark protection for your company's name, Internet address, and distinctive logos. For additional information, see for example: You should allow 1-2 weeks to do a trademark search and filing. The cost varies, but allow at least $150 in search fees plus $225 for filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. We recommend that you consult an intellectual property lawyer.

Obtain a Network Server

Unless your company is extremely large, it is not cost effective to maintain your own World Wide Web server connected directly to the Internet. Most companies will want to contract with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to maintain a "Virtual Server" connected to the Internet. Weyrich Consulting Services is a "Value Added Dealer" for Computer Video Communications & Concepts brand Virtual Internet Servers.

You should allow 1 week to get your Virtual Server set up. The cost for an individualized business virtual server is approximately $65 setup plus $150 per quarter. If you choose to share server space (sort of like using a "general delivery" mail address), the cost can be significantly lower, [but the rewards are also smaller].

Obtain a Network Address

If you are setting up an individualized virtual server then you need to obtain an Internet domain name to be used to identify your piece of the Internet. This name is typically derived from your company name or some trademark of your company. For example, the domain name of Weyrich Consulting Services is "weyrich.com". After you have chosen your Internet domain name and several alternates, you must file with the InterNIC to have your information recorded and propagated world-wide. If you are using a consultant to help establish your account, they will normally do this for you. For more information, see: Internet domain registration takes 1 to 3 weeks, and has a setup fee of $100 for the first two years, then a maintenance fee of $50/year thereafter.
